Taoiseach Micheál Martin congratulates TG4 on 25th birthday

From Department of the Taoiseach

TG4 came on air 25 years ago on Halloween night 1996 and I want to extend my warmest congratulations as it celebrates this very significant milestone this weekend.

For the last quarter of a century, TG4 has performed a vital role in Irish society, and has established itself as a distinctive and unique voice on Ireland’s media landscape.

Its success over the past 25 years is a tribute to the commitment and dedication of its staff,

management and Board, who have had the vision and drive to create innovative programming for Irish-language speakers across the country.

TG4’s vibrant mix of local, national and international news and current affairs, entertainment, sport and culture has served its core audiences well.

It has also resonated with the broader public, including those who are not fluent Irish speakers and who wish to learn the language.

As a publisher broadcaster, TG4 has played a vital role in supporting the independent production sector in the Gaeltacht regions both creating and sustaining employment.

As it looks forward to the next quarter of a century, I know that TG4 has even more exciting plans to connect with new, and younger audiences.

From the Government’s perspective, it is essential that the public continues to have access to the high quality, innovative Irish-language programming that TG4 offers.

We very much look forward to seeing TG4 go from strength to strength in the years ahead.

Congratulations once again, and best wishes for the next 25 years.
