- €6 million from Community Centre Investment Fund and €1 million from an Ciste Tacaíochtaí Pobail agus Teanga
- State-of-the-art community space for Maigh Cuilinn and surrounding area to support them into the future
Minister for Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht, Dara Calleary TD, has today turned the sod for construction to commence on Ionad Pobail Mhaigh Cuilinn, a new community facility for Maigh Cuilinn and the surrounding catchment area.
This project with a total cost of €9.3m is to receive funding of €7m from the Department of
Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht. The Community Centre Investment Fund will provide €6m with a further €1m being provided by an Ciste Tacaíochtaí Pobail agus Teanga.The Community Centre Investment Fund invests in improvements and refurbishment of community centres, as well as the development of new centres where such a need is identified. €16m has been allocated to over 100 projects in county Galway since the Community Centres Investment Fund was established in 2022
Speaking today in Maigh Cuilinn, Minister Calleary said:
“I am delighted to be here today in Maigh Cuilinn as we turn the sod for construction to start on this wonderful centre. This community facility, which includes an enterprise hub, will greatly add to community life for those in Maigh Cuilinn and the wider catchment area.
“My Department is providing up to €7 million for this facility. This project will help support the community in becoming more sustainable and resilient, and will provide much needed space for a range of community groups and activities, as well as local enterprises in this Gaeltacht location, and will also further strengthen the language planning process by providing spaces where Irish language events and activities are promoted and encouraged.”
Peadar Mac Fhlannchadha, Chairperson of Forbairt Pobail Mhaigh Cuilinn, said:
“This is a historic day for Maigh Cuilinn. Finally, the community will see the benefits of the work of generations of our members who have striven to provide excellent facilities for the area. Notes
The Community Centres Investment Fund - New Build Measure invests in new build multi-functional community centres with a minimum grant of €1,000,000 up to a maximum of €6,000,000.
12 projects were approved in April 2024 with associated funding of over €30m.
