The Minister for Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht, Dara Calleary TD, officially opened Comórtas Peile na Gaeltachta 2026 today (Friday, 29 May) in Cill Chartha, Co. Donegal.
Comórtas Peile na Gaeltachta is an annual Irish-language football tournament in which
Gaeltacht clubs from the seven Gaeltacht counties as well as Dublin and Antrim participate every year. A different Gaeltacht club hosts the tournament each year and 26 clubs will take part in this year’s tournament.Launching the competition today, Minister Calleary said:
“ I am delighted to join the players, members and supporters of CLG Chill Chartha today for this very special occasion. Cill Chartha has had a long history since the club’s founding in 1924.
“Comórtas Peile na Gaeltachta was held here in Cill Chartha over twenty years ago in 2004 and no doubt there have been great changes to the competition in the meantime. I welcome the teams here from right across the country who are taking part in this year’s competition.
“I am very happy that the Department of Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht was able to award a capital grant to CLG Chill Chartha to undertake essential work on these facilities at Páirc Peile Chill Chartha, as you prepare for the competition. The result of that work is clear today, with the wonderful field and other facilities alongside it, so that you will be able to hold a competition of this scale. As Minister for the Gaeltacht, it is a great honour for me to be present at an occasion which is so central to the life of the Gaeltacht.
“I wish all of the players, managers, club members, visitors and supporters all the best, and have an enjoyable and safe weekend.”
In the past 12 months, €350,000 has been provided by Minister Calleary and through LEADER to CLG Chill Chartha in order to develop various facilities in time for the Comórtas Peile. These new facilities will be of great help as they welcome clubs from across the country this weekend and, of course, these facilities will be available to the Cill Chartha community for many years to come.
