The Minister of State for European Affairs and Defence, Thomas Byrne TD, is in Austria today (31 August) to participate in the high-level political sessions of the European Forum Alpbach 2026.
Established in 1945 in the wake of World War II, the annual European Forum Alpbach
brings together policy-makers, academics, business leaders, civil society and young people to discuss the major themes of the day and of Europe’s place in the wider world.At the Forum, Minister Byrne will contribute to a roundtable discussion titled “Competing in a Changing World – What's Next for Europe?” with his counterparts from Austria, Poland and the UK. The Ministers will exchange views on a wide range of issues including EU enlargement, competitiveness and the future of Europe, all priority areas for the Irish Presidency of the Council of the European Union.
Minister Byrne will also take part in a discussion on European competitiveness with an audience of senior CEOs and executives from Austria and across Europe.
Speaking ahead of the Forum, Minister Byrne said: “I am looking forward to engaging with a range of colleagues and stakeholders during the European Forum Alpbach, particularly on priority areas for Ireland’s EU Presidency.
“During the six-month period of Ireland’s EU Presidency, we are working with full commitment to ensure that Europe prospers economically and its people can build a strong future for their families and communities. The Irish EU Presidency is being guided by the spirit of “ní neart go cur le chéile – strength with unity.” I look forward to seeing this spirit reflected at the Forum today.”
Minister Byrne will also meet with a number of his EU ministerial counterparts, senior politicians, business representatives and prominent academics in attendance at the Forum.
