From Department of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science
Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science Simon Harris TD has today (Friday) met with EU Ministers on the role of Research and Innovation in the Recovery and Resilience Plans in rebuilding economies and societies post pandemic.
Speaking today, Minister Harris said:
"Ireland recognises the need to invest in
research and innovation."Significant and sustained investment can facilitate the reforms required to smooth the transition to a more inclusive, sustainable and just future.
"The challenge as always will be making a compelling case for investment in research and innovation that can compete with the many funding priorities facing our Governments – particularly given the enormous challenges we face in rebuilding our economies and societies as we emerge from the crisis.
"Given the limited resources available and the magnitude of the challenges we face, I believe we need to leverage all opportunities to develop effective solutions to the most pressing challenges ahead.
"We also need to maintain an open approach to international collaboration. The pandemic has accelerated and strengthened the importance of global interaction.
"It rests with us as Research Ministers to work with all stakeholders to maximise the potential that exists for research and innovation to accelerate the recovery and ensure that we emerge into a healthier and more sustainable world than the one we left behind just over a year ago."
