From Irish Roots to the White House: Minister Patrick O’Donovan launches The American Presidents’ Trail and The Presidents’ Paths publication for America250

National America250 programme will plant the seeds of a legacy linking Irish communities with generations of U.S. Presidents

A major new initiative connecting communities across Ireland with successive Presidents of the United States is being launched as part of America250, Ireland’s commemorative programme marking the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

The American Presidents’ Trail will be a series of commemorative trees and interpretive

panels highlighting the deep ancestral and historical connections between Ireland and a significant number of American Presidents.

The initiative will be officially launched by the Minister for Culture, Communications and Sport, Patrick O’Donovan T.D. in Bruff, County Limerick, on Saturday, 4 July 2026; the 250th anniversary of American independence. The event will honour President John F. Kennedy family’s ancestral connection to the locality.

Speaking today, Minister O’Donovan said:

Almost half of all American presidents can trace their roots back to the towns, villages, and communities of Ireland. This project is recognition of that deep, enduring bond, mapping out a unique heritage trail that connects our local communities directly to the history of the White House.

In particular I would like to commend Deputy Edward Timmins for his commitment to this important commemorative project, his willingness to work with me on this to strengthen the bonds between our two nations and recognise the origins of many American presidents.

The Limerick event will mark the beginning of a series of tree planting by local authorities with recognised presidential connections later in the year. Permanent information panels developed with input from historians will be installed at participating locations, telling the story of each President’s connection to the respective community and creating a lasting heritage resource for visitors and local residents alike.

This community-led approach will enable local authorities and communities to celebrate their unique connections to the United States in ways that reflect their own heritage and traditions throughout the anniversary period.

The Presidents’ Trail will create a lasting America250 legacy, establishing a permanent network of commemorative sites that highlight Ireland’s contribution to the American story and strengthen awareness of the enduring links between communities throughout Ireland and successive Presidents of the United States.

In addition, the Minister, along with the Minister for Communities of Northern Ireland, Gordon Lyons, MLA, announced the release of a new publication The Presidents’ Paths: Life Stories of Irish America over 300 Years. The volume, a collaboration between the Department of Culture, Communication and Sport and the Department for Communities, profiles each of the United States Presidents with ancestral roots on the island of Ireland. The publication which was written by Dr Angela Byrne is designed to be a resource for all readers interested in studying both the US Presidency as an institution and the general story of the Irish in America.

It will be accompanied by another publication aimed at younger readers which will release later in the year. Together these publications will seek to increase awareness of the many Irish links with the US Presidency over the centuries and across all regions of the island.

These publications will be made freely available in keeping with the Department’s commemorations principle of accessibility.
