The Office of Public Works (OPW) is delighted to showcase the work of artist Bob Spears in his current exhibition ‘Thin Place’ at the National Botanic Gardens, Glasnevin, Dublin this February.
The term “thin place” refers to a location
where the boundary between the physical and the transcendental appears permeable, creating a mystical space where the tangible and the unseen worlds seem to intersect. Peatlands, or bogs, are often considered to possess this special characteristic, bridging the gap between the material and the numinous.Bob Speers' art is informed by his frequent wanderings through various moors and bogs. Each painting includes a sample from the specific bog it is named after, creating a unique connection between the artwork and the landscape. By incorporating materials from bogs across Ireland, as well as commercial paints and discarded household fabrics, Spear's work offers a fresh perspective on the land that is often overlooked.
