Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science James Lawless today announced €8 million in funding for green capital grants at the 16 Education and Training Boards (ETBs).
The green devolved capital grant provides
an annual allocation of €8,047,500 to help ETBs towards their delivery of energy efficiency and decarbonisation targets in Further Education and Training (FET) buildings.Speaking today, Minister Lawless said:
“I am very pleased to announce the continuation of this funding stream to the ETBs in order to support energy efficiency measures in FET colleges across the country.
“The green devolved capital grant allows ETBs to address small-scale measures specifically aimed at achieving targets for 2030, as set out in the Public Sector Climate Action Mandate.
“My department, through SOLAS, is working collaboratively to support the ETBs to meet their climate obligations in respect of the decarbonisation of the FET estate.”
Funding is provided under Project 2040 and forms part of the ongoing investment in the FET sector.
Using this grant, it will enable ETBs to develop small scale but high impact measures, such as energy audits and controls, energy upgrades and decarbonisation measures.
Initiatives that will be considered are low-energy lighting, insulation upgrades, replacement of fossil fuel heating systems with renewable heating technology.
Minister Lawless added:
“The energy use and CO2 emissions of FET buildings in an ETB’s estate are part of my department's focus. The goal of the green devolved capital grant is to help ETBs meet the Public Sector Climate Action Mandate 2030 targets.
“This grant will support ETBs in closing the gap to their targets for the FET estate and in making progress towards their Climate Action Plan goals."
Dr. Avril Behan, Director of FET College of the Future in SOLAS, said:
"SOLAS is delighted with the announcement of €8 million in funding to support Education and Training Boards (ETBs) in improving the energy efficiency of their Further Education and Training (FET) buildings and campuses.
"This funding, available through the Green Devolved Capital Grant for FET, will provide essential support to ETBs helping them to improve energy efficiency, reduce carbon emissions, and ensure that they are leading by example within their communities.
"SOLAS is committed to sustainability, to ensuring that our economy is resilient, and to upskilling our learners in facilities that demonstrate the achievement of green standards across the country. This funding will ensure that the FET sector plays its part in contributing to a greener, more sustainable environment."
The funding will be distributed through SOLAS.
Notes
SOLAS will distribute the Green Devolved Capital Allocation of just over €8 million to the individual ETBs as set out in the following table. The devolved funding bands reflect the overall scale of each ETB and are based on overall funding allocations.
This funding may be used to address small-scale measures specifically aimed at achieving targets for 2030, as set out in the Public Sector Climate Action Mandate such as:
reduce Ireland’s Greenhouse Gas emissions by 51% by 2030
increase the improvement in energy efficiency in the public sector to 50% by 2030
update Climate Action Roadmaps annually - in consultation with their assigned support under the SEAI Public Sector Partnership Programme
