Continued progress by Albania towards EU accession welcomed by Minister Byrne

Minister of State for European Affairs and Defence, Thomas Byrne TD, has today (16 September) welcomed the continued progression of Albania’s EU accession following their opening of cluster 4 (Green Agenda and Sustainable Connectivity) at the sixth Intergovernmental Conference with Albania on 16 September, a key step in the EU accession process.

Under the EU enlargement methodology, cluster 4 covers four chapters: Chapter 14: Transport Policy; Chapter 15: Energy; Chapter 21: Trans-European Networks and Chapter 27: Environment and Climate Change.

Responding to Albania reaching this milestone, Minister Byrne said:

“When I visited Albania in July to meet with members of its government, I saw first-hand their dedication and considerable will to build on Albania’s impressive momentum towards EU membership. Ireland wants to see progress made on EU enlargement and we will support Albania’s accession process in the period ahead, in advance of and during, Ireland’s EU Presidency next year.

“I congratulate Albania on opening cluster 4 and encourage them to continue to pursue ambitious and sustainable efforts towards full alignment with EU standards.”
