Ireland - Minister of State at the Department of Justice, Home Affairs and Migration, Niall Collins TD, travelled to New York this week as part of a trade mission to promote Ireland as a leading EU hub for the conduct of international legal business.
The trade mission took place over the course of three days, Tuesday 09th September to Thursday 11th September. It was organised by Ireland for Law, a Government-supported initiative, established by the Minister for Justice in 2019.
Ireland for Law promotes Irish Law and Irish Legal Services to the international business
community, particularly for commercial sectors.Minister Collins said:
"There has never been a more important time for Ireland to strengthen its international relationships. It has been an honour to support this trade mission and highlight the benefits of Ireland as a global hub for international legal services.
“Ireland has a growing international role as a trusted and innovative legal centre. This mission has been a fantastic opportunity for Ireland’s legal community to engage with international partners and showcase our robust, independent, common law legal system and our commitment to modernisation – both of which continue to make Ireland attractive to international business. This is particularly relevant for businesses in areas in which Ireland is already recognised as a world leader: aviation, finance, funds, insurance, tech, pharma and life sciences.
My Department established Ireland for Law in 2019 as an initiative to promote Irish law and Irish legal services to the international business community. Government is proud to support the ongoing work to further enhance our reputation as a leading centre for international legal services and I would like to thank Ireland for Law for their efforts in undertaking this mission and promoting Ireland.”
Minister Collins addressed six separate engagements held in various locations around the city, where he highlighted Ireland’s expertise and experience with topics such as the commercial court, dispute resolution, the future of arbitration, corporate restructuring and corporate insolvency. The panel events featured pre-eminent speakers from across Irish, Europe and US-based legal services and business.
The final engagement took place in the Irish consulate in New York, where Gerald Angley, newly appointed Consul General of Ireland to New York, hosted the delegation for a panel discussion on why Ireland is an attractive jurisdiction for businesses who seek legal certainty, efficiency and expertise.
Also joining Minister Collins on the mission were the Hon. Justice David Barniville, President, High Court of Ireland, members of the Bar of Ireland and the Law Society of Ireland.
