Ireland - The Minister for Education and Youth Helen McEntee, TD has today visited three schools in County Offaly, marking a significant moment for local schools as the new academic year begins.
Among the highlights of the day was the official opening of two new modular classrooms at Charleville National School, Church View, Tullamore.
Speaking at the event, the Minister praised the school community for their dedication and
vision.Minister McEntee said:
“This is a great day for Charleville National School. As we begin a new school year, it’s a time to reflect on the incredible work that has brought us to this point, and more importantly, to look forward with hope. Your priority – to create a warm, welcoming space where every child feels safe, included and ready to shine – is clearly being achieved. What an achievement that is.”
“Learning should be a fun and exciting journey – and with a fantastic team of teachers, pupils are encouraged to grow, explore their talents, and be the very best they can be.”
The Minister acknowledged the role of the Board of Management and trustees in bringing the project to fruition. Their commitment was key to delivering the new facilities.
During her visit, Minister McEntee also highlighted the school’s achievements in sport, music, environmental education, and STEM.
The Minister stated:
“Opportunities like these bring joy and a sense of achievement to pupils and contribute to their holistic development.”
“This school is a credit to its learners, teachers, SNAs, bus escorts, secretary, cleaners, caretaker, and the wider school community, including the tireless support of parents.”
The Minister officially opened the new modular classrooms and highlighted the Department of Education and Youth’s broader commitment to school infrastructure, noting that since 2020 the Department has invested more than €6 billion in school building projects across the country. This includes the completion of over 1,400 projects and over 400 school buildings projects currently underway involving 40 new school buildings.
Since 2020, the Department of Education and Youth invested over €90 million, supporting the completion of 31 school building projects with a further 6 currently in construction, in Offaly.
“This level of investment reflects our commitment to providing modern, inclusive, and high-quality learning environments for every child in Ireland.”
Minister McEntee congratulated all involved and expressed hope that the new facilities will support the continued success of Charleville National School for many years to come.
The Minister also visited Coláiste Choilm, Tullamore, Co. Offaly and visited Offaly School of Special Education today.
